Trip Notes
Arnside Knott is a 159-metre hill near Arnside, Cumbria, England. It is part of the South Lakeland district but lies outside the Lake District National Park, south of the River Kent. The hill is within the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is managed by the National Trust. Arnside Knott is the lowest Marilyn in England, a designation for hills with at least 150 metres of prominence. It was added to the list of Marilyns in 2004-05, after being omitted from the original 1992 listing.
For my walk up Arnside Knott, I started from the gravel car park at the end of Saul’s Drive. This car park is already some way up the hillside and facilitates a quick walk to the summit and back in under a mile of horizontal distance. I followed an obvious footpath east towards the summit. There is a network of paths around the hill which can facilitate a more significant walking route if desired.
As I climbed the gentle slopes of the hill I enjoyed great views of the Lakes. This easily accessible hill is popular with local walkers and was quite busy.
The SOTA activation zone for Arnside Knott is quite sizeable, with a summit covered in trees and bushes, making it easy to find a good spot to activate from. I chose to use the trig point briefly as a table for my Yaesu radio.
After exhausting the available station contacts on the two-metre band I packed away my equipment and walked back down to the car following a similar route.
This is a very picturesque hill and worth visiting for the wooded trails and great views. The car park makes it an easy Marilyn summit to complete.
