About Richard M1HAX
Hi, I’m Richard, a ham radio operator, hill walker and mountaineer based in the United Kingdom. Welcome to my personal website where I write about my interests in amateur radio, hiking and mountaineering.
My amateur radio callsign is M1HAX, and I’m most often found operating portable from the summits of British mountains as part of the Summits on the Air (SOTA) programme. In 2020, I was the highest-scoring SOTA activator in the UK. I hold two SOTA Mountain Goat activator trophies and a Shack Sloth chaser trophy which was earned entirely through Summit to Summit radio contacts. These days I split my time between VHF and the HF bands, chasing both local contacts and long-distance DX from the hilltops.
I’m a qualified and insured Mountain Leader, which means I hold the UK’s professional qualification for leading groups in the mountains. I also enjoy traditional rock climbing and scrambling when I get the chance. The combination of mountaineering skills and amateur radio makes for some fantastic adventures and there’s nothing quite like making contacts from a summit you’ve had to work hard to reach.
When I visit a new hill or try a new route, I endeavour to document it here for the benefit of other SOTA activators and hiking enthusiasts. I hope you find my trip reports a useful and inspiring resource for your own adventures. Each report includes GPS routes, photos, and a QSO log of the radio contacts I made from the summit.
You can see my latest SOTA activity on the excellent SOTLAS website by Manuel HB9DQM.
If you’d like to get in touch, the best way is via amateur radio — failing that, try email! You’ll find my address on the homepage.
73,
Richard
