About Richard M1HAX

Hi, I’m Richard and this is my personal website where I write about my interests in amateur radio, hiking and mountaineering. I am a qualified Mountain Leader and also enjoy traditional rock climbing. My amateur radio station call sign is M1HAX and I can often be found operating portable in the mountains of the United Kingdom as part of the Summits On The Air (SOTA) programme.

I like to get out to the hills as often as I can – in 2020 I was the highest scoring SOTA summit activator in the UK. When I visit a new hill or try a new route, I will endeavour to document it here for the benefit of other SOTA activators and hill walking enthusiasts. I hope you find my trip reports a useful and inspiring resource for your own adventures. Previously, I’ve operated mostly on the 2-metre band for SOTA, but am now performing more summit activations on the high-frequency bands. You can see my latest activity on the excellent SOTLAS website by Manuel HB9DQM.

My portable operating equipment currently consists of:

  • Elecraft KX2 10w 80-10m multimode transceiver with various end-fed and dipole antennae.
  • Yaesu FTM-100D 50w 2m/70cm transceiver with MFJ Long Ranger 2m vertical antenna.
  • Yaesu VX-6 2m/70cm handheld with Diamond SRH770S antenna.
  • Various 4S LiFePo4 batteries ranging in size up to 8400mAh.

If you would like to get in touch, the best way is via email (address link on homepage).

73,
Richard
