Brighstone Down on the Isle of Wight features Bronze Age tumuli and a forest summit clearing. A pleasant walk with good HF propagation to Europe.
St Boniface Down is the Isle of Wight’s highest point with WWII radar history. Drive-on access made for an excellent 31-contact HF and VHF activation.
Butser Hill in Hampshire is the South Downs' highest chalk summit. I made a quick HF activation en route to the Isle of Wight.
Botley Hill is marked by radio masts and accessible by road. Activated in the rain using EFHW antenna. Not scenic but easy to combine with Leith Hill.
Crowborough summit lies within the town itself. Park at the golf club, operate from adjacent woodland. Quick activation, not a hillwalking highlight.
Detling Hill is the most easterly G/SE summit. Drive-on access with good facilities for portable operation.
Leith Hill is Surrey’s highest point with a Gothic tower raising it above 1,000 feet. Pleasant woodland walking. Final summit of a productive weekend trip.
Chanctonbury Ring is an Iron Age hillfort crowned with beech trees. Easy South Downs walk with historical interest. Good operating spot among the trees.
Cliffe Hill near Lewes has a trig point beside a golf course putting green. Quick activation recommended. Approach via Week Lane bridleway.
Ditchling Beacon is the highest point in East Sussex with Iron Age hillfort remains. Drive-on summit but very busy weekends. Quick VHF activation.
